Whisper In The Wind | Lauraine Snelling | Book Review

After fleeing North Dakota and the now defunct Wild West Show, Cassie Lockwood and her companions have finally found the hidden valley in South Dakota where her father had dreamed of putting down roots. But to her dismay, she discovers a ranch already built on her land.

Cassie's arrival surprises Mavis Engstrom and forces her to reveal secrets she's kept hidden for years. Her son Ransom is suspicious of Cassie and questions the validity of her claim to the valley. But Lucas Engstrom decides from the start that he is in love with her and wants to marry her.

Will Cassie be able to build a home on the Bar E Ranch and fulfill her father's dream of raising horses, or will she be forced to return to the itinerant life of her past?

Book 2 of the Wild West Wind series, Whispers in the Wind is a fast paced and interesting story with themes of truth, forgiveness, acceptance, prejudice, danger and romance. This is the first of Snellings novels that I have read, and I enjoyed it, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys stories about the Old West, wild west shows, and unlikely romances.

Lauraine Snelling has been writing since 1980, with over 65 books published, both fiction and non-fiction, historical and contemporary, for adults and young readers. Her books consistently appear on CBA bestseller lists, and have been translated into Norwegian, Danish, and German. A hallmark of her style is writing about real issues of forgiveness, loss, domestic violence, and cancer within a compelling story. Lauraine and her husband, Wayne, have two grown sons, and live in the Tehachapi Mountains with a watchdog Bassett named Chewy. You can connect with her on her blog, Facebook, and Twitter.

A Promise To Love | Serena B Miller | Book Review

A Promise To Love
by Serena B. Miller

{About This Book }

Can a marriage of convenience ever become one of true love? Ingrid Larsen arrives in Michigan in 1871 with little more than the clothes on her back and a determination.

Destitute and barely hanging on to hope, the young Swedish immigrant crosses paths with Joshua Hunter, a newly widowed farmer with eyes the color of the ocean she had crossed and five rambunctious children to raise on his own. Marriage would solve both of their problems, and Ingrid finds herself proposing in broken English to a man she barely knows. Many difficulties lie ahead--but the hardest battle of all will be winning the heart of her new husband.

{ My Thoughts On This Book }

I absolutely loved this book! An unconventional love story where selfless devotion wins the day over blind loyalty to a dream, and where one young woman steadfastly chooses to believe God's truth about herself over the often scathing opinions of mere humanity, A Promise To Love offers a beautiful new perspective on what it means to love another person. I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves a sweet historical romance with roots in the Christian faith.

With Every Letter | Sarah Sundin | Book Review & Giveaway

With Every Letter
by Sarah Sundin

{ About This Book }

As part of a morale-building program, World War II flight nurse Lt. Mellie Blake begins an anonymous correspondence with Army engineer Lt. Tom MacGilliver in North Africa. As their letters crisscross the Atlantic, they develop a deep friendship. But when they're both transferred to Algeria, will their future be held hostage by the past—or will they reveal their identities?

Lt. Mellie Blake is a nurse serving in the 802nd Medical Squadron, Air Evacuation, Transport. As part of a morale building program, she reluctantly enters into an anonymous correspondence with Lt. Tom MacGilliver, an officer in the 908th Engineer Aviation Battalion in North Africa. As their letters crisscross the Atlantic, Tom and Mellie develop a unique friendship despite not knowing the other's true identity. When both are transferred to Algeria, the two are poised to meet face to face for the first time. Will they overcome their fears and reveal who they are, or will their future be held hostage to their past? And can they learn to trust God and embrace the gift of love he offers them? Combining excellent research and attention to detail with a flair for romance, Sarah Sundin brings to life the perilous challenges of WWII aviation, nursing, and true love.

{ My Thoughts On This Book }

With Every Letter is the first book in Sarah's new Wings Of The Nightingale series, set during WWII. Sarah Sundin once again marries the grand sweep of history to the fine detail of a faith based romantic novel, and this book is by far my favorite of hers to date!

The heroine struggles to relate to her fellow nurses, and with self-image issues. The hero hides the deep pain of a childhood full of rejection and misplaced blame behind a bright shiny smile. Both fear that no one could even look past their preconceptions to see the real person beneath...until an anonymous letter writing program designed boost troop morale brings them together at the heart.

The lies we tell ourselves are always more damaging than the lies others tells us about ourselves. Mellie and Tom learn this the hard way, almost missing the love of a lifetime in their individual quests for self-preservation. This is a story that will reach behind your masks, and poke you where it hurts. If you are honest with yourself, as these characters were in the end, you will likely come face to face with a little change of your own while reading this book.

I recommend this book, and all of Sarah's books, to anyone and everyone!

You Don't Know Me | Susan May Warren | Book Review & Author Giveaway

You Don't Know Me
by Susan May Warren

{ About This Book }

Sometimes the secrets we keep to protect ourselves can be our undoing.

To all who know her, Annalise Decker is a model wife and mother. She’s a permanent member of the PTA, never misses a sporting event, and is constantly campaigning for her husband’s mayoral race.

No one knows that Annalise was once Deidre O’Reilly, a troubled young woman whose testimony put a dangerous criminal behind bars. Relocated through the Witness Security Program to the quaint harbor town of Deep Haven, Deidre received a new identity and a fresh start, which began when she fell in love with local real estate agent Nathan Decker.

Twenty years later, Annalise couldn’t be more unprepared for her past to catch up with her. When Agent Frank Harrison arrives with news that the man she testified against is out on parole and out for revenge, Annalise is forced to face the consequences of her secrets. Will she run again, or will she finally find the courage to trust those she loves most with both her past and her future?

This is a Deep Haven novel.

{ My Thoughts On This Book }

Fast paced, with characters that are deeply flawed and entirely believable, You Don't Know Me is a story about the destructive power of lies - even ones born of necessity - and the astonishing power of forgiveness when found in Christ Jesus.

I enjoyed this book, and I recommend it to anyone who likes modern fiction with timeless messages of hope and redemption.

Unending Devotion | Jody Hedlund | Book Review

Unending Devotion
by Jody Hedlund

{ About This Book }

Lily Young longs to find her lost sister or will die trying. Heedless of any danger, she searches logging camps and towns, posing as a photographer’s assistant. And then she arrives in Harrison, Michigan–and the sights of Connell McCormick.

Connell is determined to increase the fortune of his lumber-baron father and figures as long as he’s living an upright life, that’s what matters. But when Lily arrives in town she upends his world, forcing him to confront the truth that dangerous men have gained too much power while good men turn a blind eye.

Vexing but persuasive, Lily soon secures Connell’s help, drawing them ever closer to each other. Will standing for what’s right cost them both everything?

{ My Thoughts On This Book }

Set in the logging camps of northern Michigan in 1833, Unending Devotion is a fast paced and exciting story of a young woman trying to find the little sister who ran away from an abusive foster home hoping to make a quick fortune as a saloon girl in a lumber camp brothel, only to become a captive of her poor choices. It is also the story of a man who must choose between standing against sin and slavery, and turning a profit in an industry that leaves barren wastelands in its wake for the sake of his father's will.

I enjoyed this story, and was impressed that Ms Hedlund exposed both the debauchery of prostitution and the horrors of white slavery (girls were often lured into captive lives as prostitutes on the promise of honest work as maids), as well as touching on both sides of the lumber industry issue - the devastation of clear cutting and the fact that lumber barons relied on prostitution, gambling and alcohol to keep their drastically underpaid and overworked men on the job, as well as the eventual push to reform labor laws and working conditions, and find a new way to harvest lumber while preserving our forests.

I recommend this story to anyone who enjoys historical romantic fiction with sound moral undertones.

Band Of Sisters | Cathy Gohlke | Book Review & Giveaway

Band Of Sisters
by Cathy Gohlke

{ About This Book }

Maureen O’Reilly and her younger sister flee Ireland in hope of claiming the life promised to their father over twenty years before. After surviving the rigors of Ellis Island, Maureen learns that their benefactor, Colonel Wakefield, has died. His family, refusing to own his Civil War debt, casts her out. Alone, impoverished, and in danger of deportation, Maureen connives to obtain employment in a prominent department store. But she soon discovers that the elegant facade hides a secret that threatens every vulnerable woman in the city.

Despite her family’s disapproval, Olivia Wakefield determines to honor her father’s debt but can’t find Maureen. Unexpected help comes from a local businessman, whom Olivia begins to see as more than an ally, even as she fears the secrets he’s hiding. As women begin disappearing from the store, Olivia rallies influential ladies in her circle to help Maureen take a stand against injustice and fight for the lives of their growing band of sisters. But can either woman open her heart to divine leading or the love it might bring?

{ My Thoughts On This Book }

This book moved me to tears. There are certain things I expect to encounter in my historical romantic fiction, and I'm sad to say that perception altering characters and narrative are not typically among them (though I have read some excellent exceptions lately). In Band Of Sisters, Cathy Gohlke brings to life an era in American history that is dark and full of human tragedy, and she does it in the most incredible and moving manner; simply incredible!

I relate to the fear and helplessness expressed by the main character and many of the other women in this book. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and exploitation, I care deeply about the issue of "white slavery" addressed in this story, and I am thrilled to see a novel come out that deal with these issues head on, and with incredible talent in the telling! Cathy has done a fantastic job, both in penning a compelling and gripping story that draws you in and connects you heart to heart with the young Irish immigrant, Maureen, and fills you with alarm and conviction as you realize that while the heroine is fabricated, the historical events are not. Women truly were abducted and forced into prostitution, and their oppressors did often get away with it. The most shocking realization, however, is that white slavery still exists all over the world.

The most moving moment in this story, for me, was at the very end, in the description of the Triangle Shirt Waist Factory fire. I remember reading about it in one of my history books as a teenager, but the factual nature of that tome failed to convey the horror and tragedy of hundreds of women and children leaping to their deaths rather than burn when the fire fighters could not reach the upper floors of the factory. A history book cannot send the scent of singed hair, the sight of arms crossed, hair streaming as a young woman plunges to the streets from six stories up, or the sound of thousands of onlookers crying and screaming as their loved ones perish.

It took me three attempts to read that scene, and I emptied my tissue box in the process. I have never, in all my life and years of reading, been moved to sob into my hands the way I was while reading that scene in Band Of Sisters.

I highly recommend this book to absolutely everyone! And I challenge you to look on it, not as just another great story, but as a challenge to find out how you can make a difference in the fight against white slavery.

Woodrow For President | Peter & Cheryl Barnes | Book Review

Woodrow For President
A Tail of Voting, Campaigns, and Elections
by Peter W Barnes and Cheryl Shaw Barnes

{ About This Book }

Written and illustrated by bestselling authors Peter and Cheryl Barnes, this adorable children’s book explains the presidential election process from start to finish. Woodrow for President is the story of Woodrow G. Washingtail, a little mouse whose parents dream he might one day be president of the entire mouse nation.

Woodrow grows up to be a kind, generous mouse who is loved by many people. He is encouraged to run for the presidency but first must choose a political party, debate his way through the primaries, and be chosen by the states as the candidate for the Bull Mouse party. In the general election he is up against tough competition from the candidate of the Country Mouse Party, Senator Rufus C. Tuftmouse, who created the U.S. Department of Cheese but, in the end, Woodrow wins and becomes the official president elect.

Woodrow for President will help children understand what all the hype is about this year as the country gears up for the presidential election. The book also explains why it is so important to get involved, volunteer and vote in presidential elections. Woodrow for President is a wonderful way for parents to educate their children about political parties, primaries, debates and all the other events that will be prominent this year.

{ My Thoughts On This Book }

What a fun book! Written in verse, it clearly and easily communicates the process of becoming the President of the United States. Cute illustrations, a "find the Secret Service mouse" picture hunt on each 2 page spread, and an entire section in the back of the book to continue the dialog between parents, teachers and students, this is not only a fun book that I believe children will enjoy reading, but it is a very informative and useful resource in the task of educating the next generation of voting Americans. Woodrow For President is definitely staying in my collection for the homeschooling years!

The Midwife Of Hope River | Patricia Harman | Book Review

The Midwife Of Hope River
by Patricia Harman

As a midwife working in the hardscrabble conditions of Appalachia during the Depression, Patience Murphy's only solace is her gift: the chance to escort mothers through the challenges of childbirth. Just beginning, she takes on the jobs no one else wants: those most in need--and least likely to pay. Patience is willing to do what it takes to fulfill her mentor's wishes, but starting a midwife practice means gaining trust, and Patience's secrets are too fragile to let anyone in.

The Midwife Of Hope River is, by far, one of the best books I have read this year! Harman's prose is incredible, full of rich imagery and poignant moments that will bring tears to your eyes and a smile to your lips. I have long been interested in birth work, and this moving story really cemented that desire in my heart.

Patricia Harman, CNM, has published in The Journal of Midwifery & Women's Health and The Journal of Sigma Theta Tau for Nursing Scholarship as well as alternative publications. She is a regular presenter at national midwifery conferences. Harman got her start as a lay-midwife on the rural communes where she lived in the '60s and '70s, going on to become a nurse-midwife on the faculty of Ohio State University, Case Western Reserve University, and West Virginia University. She lives and works near Morgantown, West Virginia, and has three sons. Read more about Patricia Harman.

Food Family Style | Leigh Oliver Vickery | Book Review

Food Family Style
by Leigh Oliver Vickery

{ About This Book }

In a time when the family meal is increasingly losing out to music lessons, sports practices, and the general busyness of life, it's time to rediscover the joys of cooking and eating together as a family. Time may be short and budgets may be tight, but these 365 mouthwatering recipes are sure to draw families into the kitchen and around the table day after day. From tasty breakfasts, soups, and salads to sumptuous main dishes and desserts, Food Family Style delivers just what readers' families ordered.

Throughout the book are symbols indicating recipes that double easily, freeze well, are gluten-free or vegetarian, can be made in a slow cooker, and more. And since there's more to mealtime than just the food, this innovative book also includes tips about how to involve kids in meal preparation, meaningful conversation starters, and simple ideas to bring warmth to your home.

{ My Thoughts On This Book }

Food Family Style is a fun and easy to use cookbook developed for the MOPS (Mothers Of Preschoolers) program by Leigh Oliver Vickery, creator of the White Queso used at Cowboy Stadium in Texas. I enjoyed this book for several reasons ~ simple format, fun thoughts at the beginning of each section, symbols to help you find the perfect recipe for specific occasions and uses. My favorite thing about this book is the food. I am a pretty picky eater, and almost every single recipe looks so good!! I think Food Family Style is a great book, and every family that wants to make yummy and easy food for (and with) their families should add it to their collections.

Below, you will find one of the breakfast recipes from this cookbook, which we (ironically) had for dinner last night. Enjoy!

 Eggs Gruyere ~ serves 2-4

8 oz. Gruyere cheese, shredded
4 eggs
2 bacon slices, cooked and crumbled
1 tsp. chives, chopped
freshly ground black pepper to taste
1/2 cup bread crumbs

Preheat oven to 300F. Spread half of the cheese in a greased 1-quart baking dish or pan. Break whole eggs onto cheese (don't mix the eggs), evenly spaced. Sprinkle bacon and chives over eggs; cover with remaining cheese. Season with pepper. Sprinkle bread crumbs over top. Bake for 15 minutes or until mixture is set. Slightly brown top under broiler.

When I made this, I changed up a few things, but it turned out really yummy anyway. Instead of Gruyere cheese (a form of swiss cheese, which I can't find at my local grocery store) I used mozzarella, and I used pre-cooked and -crumbled bacon instead of cooking my own. We ate this on its own, but it would be great served with a side of seasonal fruit, especially melons.

Note:: There appears to be a typo in this recipe, that is rather significant. The recipe says to cook this dish for 300F, but my sister-in-law and I believe that it is supposed to read 400F. We baked the dish at 300F for 30 minutes (twice the indicated bake time), and the cheese was barely melted and the egg white were still clear and gelatinous - yuck! So we turned the heat up to 400F and cooked it an additional 10 minutes, and everything melted and cooked beautifully at that temperature. We enjoyed the finished dish, but it was kind of hit and miss there for a while.

I would love to hear what you think about this recipe, and if you try it for yourself. It's super easy!

{ About The Author }

Leigh Oliver Vickery is the owner and creative behind Leigh Oliver's, the gourmet food genius behind White Queso, a delicious looking natural cheese spread used exclusively in the Cowboy Stadium in Texas. They make a wide range of dips, sauces, and cheese spreads, including Gouda Green Chili Pimento Cheese, which I would love to try! Leigh says, "I love to imagine new wonderful tastes and share them with my friends and family. I like to cook foods that make you smile...a taste in your mouth that reminds you life is really good."

Raising Financially Confident Kids | Mary Hunt | Book Review

I found this book on my front porch when I picked up my mail a few weeks ago, and was quite baffled, as I do not remember requesting this title for review. Raising Financially Confident Kids. Why would I want to read about debt-proofing kids when mine is only 3 months old, right? Wrong. Turns out it was the best and most relevant thing I've read all year...

Drawing from solid statistics and her own hard-won knowledge and experience, Hunt helps parents protect their children from the financial pitfalls of easy credit, an attitude of entitlement, and our culture’s chummy relationship with debt. From preschool through the teen years, every stage of a child’s development is covered, including how to talk to them about money, how to help them start saving money and giving it away, and how to manage money wisely.

This book is not just useful for dept-proofing your children. It is easily the most useful thing I have read to help anyone begin to practice financially-sound money habits. Raising Financially Confident Kids presents the basics of dept-free living in a simple and easy to understand format. Mary Hunt is a superb writer, who somehow manages to combine sound principles with an engaging voice that keeps you turning the pages to the very end, and never more excited to learn about money management. I can't wait to get my hands on her other books!

Mary Hunt is the author of the money management website, Dept-Proof Living, and the personal blog, Mary Hunt's Everyday Cheapskate, along with several other books including Can I Pay My Credit Card Bill With A Credit Card? and Financially Confident Woman. The River Rose | Gilbert Morris | Book Review & Giveaway

The River Rose
by Gilbert Morris
B&H Publishing Group
392 pages

{ About This Book }

Life hasn’t been easy for Jeanne Bettencourt, a widow approaching thirty and struggling to provide for her six-year-old daughter. But hope arrives in the form of the Helena Rose, a steamboat she unexpectedly inherits from a distant, departed relative. Jeanne’s father had captained a similar vessel and taught her how to pilot a steamer; this could be her ticket to a renewed livelihood, one of comfort and security, for her and her daughter.

Unfortunately, there is another heir to the Helena Rose -- a tough man named Clint Hardin. Jeanne, a Christian woman, feels that she can't possibly "live" with a man on the boat. But both are desperate for work, so they agree to an uneasy compromise to keep their relationship on a strict business basis.

As they begin their successful partnership on the Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers, the slowly softening Clint becomes attracted to Jeanne, who is now being courted by a wealthy plantation owner. With her family and future at stake, the desires of Jeanne’s heart are becoming duly complex. Only faith can steer her through what happens next.

{ My Thoughts On This Book }

My mom introduced me to Gilbert Morris's historical fiction when I was in high school. I spent countless hours reading about his engaging characters during the various stages of our nations' history, and had serious crushes on more than one of the heroic male leads. It has been almost a decade since I picked up a Morris novel, due more to life changes and forgetfulness than to anything else, and I am so glad I did!

The River Rose is a fast moving and compelling story that I really enjoyed. As with all of his novels, Morris provides a wealth of historical information and detail that fills the story with depth and realism. The only issue I had with this story was that when Clint became a believer, he immediately swore off all of his previous vices without a single hint of difficulty, which felt contrived to me. Thankfully, that was a minor detail, and did not detract from the overall story. Dealing with themes of questioning faith, romance, forgiveness, justice, societal norms, and morality, this book will keep your attention riveted until the final page.

Inescapable
by Nancy Mehl

{ From the Book Cover }

Lizzie Engel is used to running away. At eighteen, she left her Mennonite hometown, Kingdom, Kansas, with plans never to return.

But five years later, the new life she built is falling apart. Lizzie knows she's being followed, and she's certain the same mysterious stranger is behind the threatening letters she's received. Realizing she'll have to run again, the only escape Lizzie can manage is a return to the last place she wants to go.

Once she arrives in Kingdom, Lizzie is confident she'll be safe until she comes up with a new plan. In reacquainting herself with the town and its people--especially her old friend, Noah Housler--she wonders if she judged her hometown and her Mennonite faith too harshly. However, just as she begins to come to terms with her roots, Lizzie is horrified to discover the danger she ran from is closer than ever.

No longer sure who to trust and fearful for her life and the lives of those around her, Lizzie finds she has only one place left to run--to the Father whose love is inescapable.

{ My Thoughts On This Book }

Inescapable is a fast paced story that touches on themes of judgement, forgiveness, consequence, and perception. Well written and engaging, it is a good story with compelling lessons that are delivered subtly, without being preachy. If you enjoy stories set in conservative Mennonite or Amish settings, you may enjoy this book.

{ Synopsis }

Award-winning former Boston Globe reporter Mitchell Zuckoff unleashes the exhilarating, untold story of an extraordinary World War II rescue mission, where a plane crash in the South Pacific plunged a trio of U.S. military personnel into a land that time forgot. Fans of Hampton Sides’ Ghost Soldiers, Marcus Luttrell’s Lone Survivor, and David Grann’s The Lost City of Z will be captivated by Zuckoff’s masterfully recounted, all-true story of danger, daring, determination, and discovery in jungle-clad New Guinea during the final days of WWII.

{ About The Author }

Mitchell Zuckoff is a professor of journalism at Boston University and a former special projects reporter for the Boston Globe, where he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for investigative reporting. His honors include the 2000 Distinguished Writing Award from the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Christopher Award for his book Chosing Naia: A Family’s Journey, which was a Boston Globe bestseller. His magazine work has appeared in The New Yorker, Fortune, and other national and regional publications.

{ My Review }

I am not usually interested in reading documentary style books, but I have always found war history fascinating, so I decided to give this one a chance ~ I am glad I did!

Lost In Shangri-La is the riveting story of three individuals who survive a terrible plane crash into the side of a mountain in New Guinea, and a lengthy rescue mission into the heart of a previously unexplored valley. Facing tropical rainforest, severe injuries, warring natives rumored to be cannibalistic headhunters, and the daunting logistics of escaping a closed valley thousands of feet above sea level, the real life heroes in this book will inspire you.

This book is well worth the read.

Baroness is the second book in The Daughters of Fortune series by Susan May Warren. I reviewed Heiress a while back (read my review here), and absolutely loved it!! This book was no different, and I cannot wait for the next installment to come out!

Picking up where Heiress left off, Baroness follows Rosie and Lily as they find their way in the new world created for them by their mothers' choices. Furious at being dragged from the family ranch she loves in Montana to live a sterile life in New York, Lily strikes out against her stepfather in the aftermath of her mother's death, and becomes a wing-walker in a traveling air show. Caught up in the heady adoration of all the men who surround her, Rosie seeks her fortune as a singer/dance on Broadway. Both girls run after their dreams - but what they find is more of a nightmare.

Dealing with themes of rebellion, cause and effect, and forgiveness, Susan May Warren pens yet another incredible story of humanity, and it is well worth the read!
