Beanfields | Corn & Gluten-Free Black Bean & Rice Chips | Review & Giveaway

You may remember from eons past on this blog that I have had quite a bit of difficulty with digestive issues for over a decade, with few answers to cause at this point. I experienced an unexpected reprieve during my recent pregnancy, but now that my daughter is almost 6 months old I have begun to see a resurgence of symptoms, and I have to tell you, I'm not thrilled. I already know that I have trouble with Candida overgrowth, but one theory that I've tossed around is that I may be sensitive to gluten - the protein found in grains like wheat and barley. Another theory is that I may be sensitive to corn. At this time, I am limiting my gluten intake with intentions to eliminate it completely after the holidays (what, a girl's gotta live a little, even if uncomfortably), and corn will follow once that is under control. I'd throw it all out at once, cold turkey, but frankly, it's just a little much right now. I know - people do it and do it well (my sister-in-law's family did, just this fall), but what can I say? I guess I'm a little chicken. Or maybe just lazy. Feel free to not tell me which you think it is. *wink*

I had the pleasure of testing Beanfields Crispylicious! black bean and rice chips. Corn and gluten-free, these chips are made from high quality black beans and long grain rice, and are flavored with natural ingredients. My mom helped me taste test (so did my husband, but more about that later).

Beanfields Bean & Rice Chips are great tasting snacks that are healthier for you:

bullet point Complete Protein: 4 grams in every serving, as much as a 4 oz. glass of milk.
bullet point Fiber: 4 grams in every serving, the same as a ½ cup serving of raisin bran.
And you get both soluble and insoluble fiber, which aids digestion. The fiber also helps
you feel fuller longer.
bullet point Allergen Specific: Beanfields is free of every one of the FDA's eight most common
ingredients that trigger food allergies.
bullet point Complex Carbohydrates provide long lasting energy.
bullet point Minerals our bodies need, including potassium and magnesium.
bullet point Half the saturated fat and one third less sodium than most corn tortilla chips.

To make these chips even more awesome, all of the flavors are free of any genetically-modified organisms (non-GMO) and are recipients of the prestigious Non-GMO Verification awarded by the Non-GMO Project.

 They also received Best Of Show at the 2012 Natural Products Expo West for 2012! Here's what VegNews had to say about Beanfields...

"We are obsessed (no, really) with Beanfields' new Nacho Bean & Rice Chips. The vegan answer to Doritos!" - VegNews

Corn free, vegan, and gluten free, Beanfields Crispylicious! Nacho Bean & Rice Chips contain 4 grams each of protein and fiber, and have been called the healthy alternative to Doritos.

I tried these chips, and they are interesting. The bean flavor - a subtle earthiness - does interact oddly with the nacho flavor, and I am not personally a fan of that. But they're not bad! I'm not a big fan of nacho flavored chips in general, so perhaps I am not the best judge of this particular flavor, though. My mom said these were her favorite, and she does like nacho flavored chips. Perhaps we'd better take her word for it instead of mine?

The Naturally Salted variety of Beanfields is the closest to nature of the varieties. Earthy and crisp, but without much defining taste. I think these would be best used in a recipe, like taco salad or similar, where they are there more for texture than for flavor.

Evidently, the Pico De Gallo flavor of Beanfields is delicious. Sadly, I wouldn't know, because my husband ate every last one of the 2 bags we received before I even knew they had arrived!

"These things are amazing!!" ~ Nick Belleque

I was really excited about the Sea Salt & Pepper flavor of Beanfields, but I personally found them to be way to peppery. It's a great flavor, just too strong for me. I think these would be good crumbled into a hearty stew or soup, though *smiles*

These were my favorite! Sea Salt - nice and subtle, a little zippy, and perfect for a light snack or a side with soup or for nachos. Yum!

Overall, I like these chips, and I think they are a good alternative to corn chips. It's good to know that there is a decent choice for those with corn or gluten intolerance, and even those who can eat anything they want may enjoy the change of pace from plain ol' corn. I personally love black beans and how versatile they can be, and these chips are testament to just that!

You can connect with Beanfields on their website, Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus.

Beanfields products are currently available in multiple stores on the west coast, and online. Full cases of 12 6oz bags in any one flavor or your personal assortment of flavors are available for $40.00 and $8.00 shipping/handling, and full cases of 24 1.5oz bags in any one flavor or your personal assortment of flavors are available for $30.00 and $6.00 shipping/handling (Naturally Unsalted is not available in 1.5oz bags).

Noxicare Natural Pain Relief Cream | Product Review

My mother-in-law, Cindy, has dealt with pain in her knees and hands for years, and was more than willing to test out Noxicare Natural Pain Relief Cream when I received it for review in the mail. A small, light weight tube of white cream, purported to relieve even the worse pain associated with fibromyalsia, arthritis, and more, we were eager to find out if it lives up to its claims...

Noxicare™ is a breakthrough natural, patent-pending pain relief formula that is a proprietary combination of 7 of the world’s most potent natural pain relievers that quickly and effectively alleviate inflammation, muscle aches and nerve pain—with NO known side effects and without a prescription.
While some other products might reduce inflammation, decrease muscle aches or increase blood flow to ease painful nerve endings, Noxicare™ treats all three types of pain—not by numbing the pain point—but by targeting the source of the pain with a natural formulation that deeply penetrates layers of skin to help promote the body’s own healing process.
Noxicare™ relaxes the muscle and reduces inflammation to alleviate pain, while working to increase blood flow to calm painful nerve endings.

Developed by Dr. Reza Ghorbani, a Harvard-trained physician board certified in pain management, Noxicare™ has proven to be a valuable, first line pain management tool that complements other medical treatments and therapies.

Noxicare is available in both a cream (topical application for direct pain relief) and pill form (for all over pain relief), and contains the following 7 natural ingredients...

  1. Turmeric: one of the powerful healers found in nature, recognized for its anti-inflammatory properties.
  2. Willow Bark: has been used to treat pain and inflammation since the time of Ancient Egypt and Greece.
  3. Ginger: helps alleviate muscle strains, arthritis and rheumatism, and is a catalyst for improving the effectiveness of other herbs.
  4. Holy Basil: properties include anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial and antiviral.
  5. Rosemary Extract: has served a variety of purposes including topical use for joint or musculoskeletal pain.
  6. Alpha Lipoic Acids: antioxidants used to treating diabetic neuropathy and increasing blood flow to the nerves.
  7. Boswellia Extract: an anti-inflammatory used to treat arthritis and joint pain.

Cindy applied the cream to her knees, hands, and her Achilles tendon several times over the course of a week, including every night before bed. Here is what she had to say about Noxicare Natural Pain Relief Cream...

Pros::
  1. Rubs into skin easily, with the texture and thickness of a quality lotion.
  2. No scent of any kind - completely odorless!
  3. Moisturizes as a bonus - left her skin soft and smooth.
  4. It works! While it does not remove the pain completely, Cindy says that it reduces it significantly.
Cons::
  1. None, unless you are looking for complete pain removal. Cindy says that it is much like acetaminophen or other OTC pain relievers in that it reduces the pain proportionately to the degree of pain to begin with (ie: the more pain, the less relief), but that it works very well and she experienced enough relief to be able to easily fall (and stay) asleep after using it.
Ultimately, Cindy loved this stuff so much she kept it and will not only continue to use it, but she is interested in purchasing more when she runs out. I call that a pretty convincing recommendation!

You can learn more about Noxicare on their website, and you can connect with them on Facebook and Twitter. You can purchase Noxicare Natural Pain Relief Cream for $19.95 here.

She made the best choice she could . . . and has lived with the consequences.

I really enjoyed this book! Whitlow does an excellent job marrying narrative with legal history and making them flow together in an interesting and engaging story that will pull at your heartstrings and make you ask yourself the hard questions. The River Rose | Gilbert Morris | Book Review & Giveaway

The River Rose
by Gilbert Morris
B&H Publishing Group
392 pages

{ About This Book }

Life hasn’t been easy for Jeanne Bettencourt, a widow approaching thirty and struggling to provide for her six-year-old daughter. But hope arrives in the form of the Helena Rose, a steamboat she unexpectedly inherits from a distant, departed relative. Jeanne’s father had captained a similar vessel and taught her how to pilot a steamer; this could be her ticket to a renewed livelihood, one of comfort and security, for her and her daughter.

Unfortunately, there is another heir to the Helena Rose -- a tough man named Clint Hardin. Jeanne, a Christian woman, feels that she can't possibly "live" with a man on the boat. But both are desperate for work, so they agree to an uneasy compromise to keep their relationship on a strict business basis.

As they begin their successful partnership on the Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers, the slowly softening Clint becomes attracted to Jeanne, who is now being courted by a wealthy plantation owner. With her family and future at stake, the desires of Jeanne’s heart are becoming duly complex. Only faith can steer her through what happens next.

{ My Thoughts On This Book }

My mom introduced me to Gilbert Morris's historical fiction when I was in high school. I spent countless hours reading about his engaging characters during the various stages of our nations' history, and had serious crushes on more than one of the heroic male leads. It has been almost a decade since I picked up a Morris novel, due more to life changes and forgetfulness than to anything else, and I am so glad I did!

The River Rose is a fast moving and compelling story that I really enjoyed. As with all of his novels, Morris provides a wealth of historical information and detail that fills the story with depth and realism. The only issue I had with this story was that when Clint became a believer, he immediately swore off all of his previous vices without a single hint of difficulty, which felt contrived to me. Thankfully, that was a minor detail, and did not detract from the overall story. Dealing with themes of questioning faith, romance, forgiveness, justice, societal norms, and morality, this book will keep your attention riveted until the final page.

Closer To Nature Breast Care Starter Pack | Tommee Tippee | Review & Giveaway

Yep, it's another Tommee Tippee product review and giveaway! *smiles* Here's a little something for mommy, this time...

Allow me to introduce the Closer To Nature Breast Care Starter Pack...

Containing 36 disposable breast pads, 2 washable and reusable breast pads, and 1 zippered storage bad, this is a great starter kit for new moms. The bag is made out of some kind of neoprene, is waterproof, and easily holds up to 8 pads at a time, so it's especially great for carrying your nursing pads around in your diaper bag. No more fishing around in the bottom of your bag for loose packets!

The disposable fabric on these breast pads is super soft and comfortable, and breathes well. The back of each pad has a sticky spot - just peel off the tag and stick it to your bra. Unfortunately, this feature didn't work at all for me, but I am quite large breasted, so that may have simply put to much strain on the poor things (gravity and all that). In other words, the stick patch held the pad to my bra very well until I wore it for a while, and then it no longer stayed put (but it did stay sticky).

These are the reusable breast pads. I have to admit that I did not actually wear these; I was put off by the rough weave of the pad, which really did not feel that comfortable on my fingers, and I wasn't thrilled with the thought of them rubbing on more sensitive tissue. It did occur to me well after the fact (darn that pregnancy brain!) that running them through the wash a few times before using them may have made a difference. I would like to point out that even if you find them too rough like I did, the value of the Starter Pack is not diminished at all by their presence.

As you can see, these breast pads have a very slim line design, that doesn't take up much room inside your bra, and you can't see the outline at all from the outside, even with a tight shirt.

Closer To Nature Clear Shield Pacifiers & Pacifier Holders | Tommee Tippee | Review & Giveaway

Yep, here's another Tommee Tippee review! Like I mentioned before, they sent me a HUGE box of awesome products to review, and today I want to tell you about the Closer To Nature Clear Shield Pacifiers and Pacifier Holders.
{ Closer To Nature Clear Shield Pacifiers 6-18m }

Serenity is only 2 months old, so all I can say about these adorable pacifiers (which are designed for babies 6 to 18 months old) is that they are very well designed, very cute, all the pieces move smoothly, and I love that the clear design allows more of your baby's cherubic face to remain visible while they self-soothe. Here's what Tommee Tippee has to say about these cute pacifiers...

The new Closer to Nature pacifiers (Pure, C-air, and Soft) were created by a bio-medical engineer and a pediatric dentist. They studied the way that the tongue functions and the way that infants suck, and wanted to develop a soother to be more natural and fit more naturally in the mouth.

When a baby sucks on a pacifier, they build up internal pressure in their mouth, the tongue is low and the cheek muscles push inwards on the palate. Our new pacifier is designed to have a natural fit in the mouth and gently expands in an umbrella-like fashion to support the palate and maintain its natural shape.

There are a lot of orthodontic shaped pacifiers on the market today, but what we have developed is a pacifier that provides an orthodontic function.

This pacifier promotes safe and healthy oral development because of its natural fit and unique attributes in the design of the teat.

These pacifiers also come in a handy sterilizer case that doubles as a storage case. All you have to do to sterilize these pacifiers is put them in the case, add water to the first oval line on the case, and microwave for about a minute and a half (adjust time for microwaves with wattage over 1000 watts).

In addition to the pacifiers, I also received a pair of Closer To Nature Pacifier Holders for review...

{ Closer To Nature Pacifier Holders }

These holders have flexible rings designed to either clip onto ring pacifiers (like the ones in this review) or around the plug on plug-style pacifiers. They are also BPA free and easily wipe clean. While I haven't used them with Serenity yet because of her age (at the moment, she refuses to take any pacifier, and we're still working through some latch issues), I did check out the flexibility, ease of use, sturdiness of the clip and the various components, and I am impressed with the craftsmanship. These are quality pacifier holders!

Check out the rest of the awesome products from Tommee Tippee on their website, and find exclusive offers and promotions on their Facebook and Twitter pages!

The Day Baby Was Born | Tommee Tippee | Website Review & Giveaway

A few days back, I introduced you to the baby and mommy stuff brand, Tommee Tippee, in my review of their awesome Explora Bibs (check out my review and enter to win a pair of these great bibs here). Today, I have something fun to tell you about, that they are quite proud of...

The Day Baby Was Born
A digital storybook that captures baby's beginnings
The Day Baby Was Born is an interactive website that helps expectant parents chronicle their pregnancy and their child's birth. It gathers status updates about your baby from Facebooks, allows you to journal pregnancy memories, it has guided prompts to record your birth story, you can upload photographs to illustrate your story, and much more!

Your information is saved on a secure server, and is not shared with Tommee Tippee or anyone else. You have the option to share your story book to Facebook if you want, and you can control the privacy settings when you do, so you get to decide who gets to see it. You can also download your book as a .pdf file, so you can share it with your little one on your home computer, or even print it out and add it to their baby book! Lots of options.

I am big time into traditional and digital scrapbooking, so while I made one of these books, I didn't find the site overly useful for my own family. That said, it was a very easy site to use, and for anyone wanting an easy and elegant way to record pregnancy and birth memories, The Day Baby Was Born is an excellent resource!

If you want to see my book, you are welcome to check it out here. Pardon the quality of the pictures, please ~ I am still making them all pretty *wink*

You can get your own The Day Baby Was Born baby book here ~ it's FREE!! Be sure to check out all the great products from Tommee Tippee on their website, and you can connect with them on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to learn more, and receive great discounts.

Explora Bibs | Tommee Tippee | Review & Giveaway

"Simply intuitive" and "closer to nature" ~ Tommee Tippee's bywords, and with good reason. With a wide variety of products for babies and young children, they are leaders in infant technology that works with natural sucking instincts, and is eco-conscious.

I am very excited to be working with this incredible brand, and it is my pleasure to introduce you to the first of several products they sent me for review. Let me tell you, opening their box and seeing not one but several products was very exciting! To start things off, allow me to introduce you to the Explora Bib...

My adorable niece and nephew helped me try out these fun bibs, which are made of a very soft and lightweight rubbery material that is BPA free. Nico is 15 months old, and Cinda will be 3 years old this fall, and as you can see, the bibs fit both of them quite well. Each bib has three size adjustments in the back, and the material is soft enough that it easily conforms to a variety of sizes without bunching. I especially love that while these are made out of waterproof materials, they are not crinkly or hard at all, and are just as gentle on baby skin as traditional fabric bibs.

One of the cool things about this bib is that food does not stick to it like it does to other kinds of bibs, but liquids do not simply run off of it, either, so it cuts down on mess. Add in the crumb catcher at the bottom of the bib, and this is one sweet piece of meal time loot! These bibs are also quite wide and deep, allowing for maximum coverage of your child's chest and stomach, and minimizes the amount of food you have pick out of their lap or off their chair. And storage? A breeze! All you do is roll it up from the bottom, and it fits into any drawer or cupboard with ease.

You can purchase Explora Bibs online or at any Babies R Us or Target store for around $6.99, and you can connect with them on their website, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

One lucky Our Little Bit Of Wonderful reader will win a pair of these awesome bibs, courtesy of the Tommee Tippee team! To be eligible to win, you must be at least 18 years old, a resident of the United States, and you must enter your information into the Rafflecopter widget below, completing each entry that you claim credit for. Have fun, and be sure to come back to complete the daily posts for extra entries, to improve your chances of winning!

ecoStore | Product Review & Giveaway

Truly natural, truly pure household products... Effective, toxin-free products your pet will love... Healthy plant-based products for your baby... ecoSTORE USA products provide safe, healthy alternatives to everyday brands, while at the same time featuring outstanding performance and value for the dollar... All ecoSTORE USA products are plant and mineral based and free of toxic ingredients.

~ ecoStore website

These are just a few of the sentiments you will find at the ecoStore USA. And guess what? They're true!

I received two fantastic products from the ecoStore to try out, and I love them both...

{ Coconut & Vanilla Hand Wash }

Nick and I both enjoy the scent of Coconut & Vanilla Hand Wash, though both of us wish that it had a little more lather. The formula is smooth and light weight, and leaves your hands feeling both clean and refreshed. A little goes a long way, too, which is great because you don't have to replace it often. Made with essential oils, wheatgerm and wheat protein, and completely free from Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, artificial dyes, perfumes and preservatives, this hand soap leaves your skin's natural oils where they belong - on your skin - and doesn't dry out your skin, instead leaving it moisturized and silky smooth.

I have found that a full pump dispenses way more soap than you actual need, so I only press down enough for a small pearl of soap to appear (the amount in the picture is about half a pump, and is still far more than you really need). Overall, I love this soap, and once you figure out how much you really need, the absence of lather doesn't matter.

{ Laundry Detergent 32oz }

This Laundry Detergent is by far my absolute favorite laundry soap I have ever used, and I will definitely be a repeat customer. With a very faint scent reminiscent of these little white flowers that grow in the fields of my native Montana, and Eucalyptus oil, it leaves nothing behind on your clothes but a clean, fresh scent. I have a very sensitive respiratory system and very sensitive skin, and I love that - unlike other detergents that make my skin and nose itch, and give me headaches from the perfumes used - this detergent leaves my skin alone, and the scent doesn't bother me at all!

Its super concentrated formula allows you to use as little as half a capful per load of laundry, and as you can see, these caps are pretty small to begin with. This tiny bottle of detergent really stretches!

Just add your soap directly to your load of laundry - no staining, unlike some detergents! This product is specially formulated to be used with delicates and woolens, as well as with your regular laundry. I use it with everything from denims to towels to my infant daughter's tiny clothing and blankets! You can also use this detergent with HE washers.

The back of each ecoStore product has information about the specific product, as well as earth-friendly information about a variety of topics. The bottle itself is recyclable, light weight (as is the product inside), and it easily wipes clean if any detergent spills, so you never get that nasty sticky residue on the outside of the bottle.

You can connect with the ecoStore directly by "liking" their Facebook page, or following them on Twitter.

Want to win some of these great products for yourself? The great folks at the ecoStore are kindly sponsoring a giveaway of five of their fantastic bar soaps (one in each scent, including the baby bar) to one of my lucky readers! You must be at least 18 years old and a resident of the United States or Canada to win, and all you have to do is enter via the Rafflecopter form below. Good luck!
